Q00:  NEW!!!  Possible issue with offline maps download  (27 July 2017)

I am trying to download offline maps but the app crashes, what is wrong?

In the latest update, Version 1.8.6, there may be crash issues with devices with Android versions 6.0 and above.

The issue is the following.  I overlooked asking for permissions in the latest update.  The permissions model was introduced in later Android SDK versions.

To solve the problem, please go to:

Settings->Apps->Camino Pilgrim and enable Location and Storage.

I will fix this permission issue as soon as possible.

Q0:  NEW!!!  Issue with offline maps download (15 March 2015) I wanted to update the offline maps but it does not work anymore.  You can see that it downloads something but when I want to see the map, it gives the message  that the mapsforge is not available. Can you help please?

Recently, there have been some reports that there is difficulty in downloading offline maps. It seems to be an issue with the download server for the maps files.  Here is a workaround for this issue in the meantime until I can get my own server up and running with a copy of the said maps for the Camino Pilgrim.  Please bear with me until I set up a new server to host the maps, as this will cost me my own time and money.

Please follow the following steps:

  • Please install a file explorer app into your android device. I recommend ES File Explorer
  • Open a browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.
  • Navigate to the following URL:
http://www.maps.moemke.eu/mapsforge/camino/spain.map

http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/download.mapsforge.org/maps/europe/spain.map

  • Wait till spain.map finishes downloading
  • Then navigate to this URL:
http://www.maps.moemke.eu/mapsforge/camino/aquitaine.map

http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/download.mapsforge.org/maps/europe/france/aquitaine.map

  • Wait till aquitaine.map finishes downloading.
  • NOTE! Download progress can be seen on the Notifications (swipe down from the top of your device) with the file names spain.map and aquitaine.map.  There will be a message "Download Completed" when the file/s have been downloaded.  Please be patient, the downloading will take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection...
  • Open ES File Explorer and go to the Download directory.   You should see the following 2 files:
    • spain.map (about 288 MB)
    • aquitaine.map (about 104 MB)
    • NOTE! If a number appears with the download, i.e. such as spain (1).map or aquitaine (2).map, this means you have downloaded the file more than once.  Check that the size of the file is correct -- about 280-290 MB for spain.map and around 104-110 MB for aquitaine.map. Choose the correct version and make sure to rename them to spain.map and aquitaine.map (you can rename the file by long-clicking on the file until a check appears beside it, then choose the option Rename and write the correct name)
  • Still using ES File Explorer, move these files to the following directory in your device:  /storage/emulated/0/CaminoPilgrim/Offline Maps  (or /sdcard/CaminoPilgrim/OfflineMaps -- depending on your Android version).  You can long click on each of the files until there is a check mark beside it, click on the 3 dots (More) , and choose the option Move to, then choose the directory  /storage/emulated/0/CaminoPilgrim/Offline Maps (or /sdcard/CaminoPilgrim/OfflineMaps), then click OK.
  • Check again with ES File Explorer. You should have spain.map and aquitaine.map in the directory:  /storage/emulated/0/CaminoPilgrim/Offline Maps (or /sdcard/CaminoPilgrim/OfflineMaps).
  • Now open Camino Pilgrim and try if you can now see the offline maps!
  • Please let me know if you encounter other problems by clicking on Send Feedback!
  • I have set up as server to provide offline maps for free. The downloading may not be as fast as a commercial server.  Please be patient and do not give me bad reviews.  I have spent a lot of time working on this app, and I am trying to maintain it to the best of my ability.
  • This is a temporary solution until I can set up my own server. Please be patient and do not give me bad reviews. It is not my server and I can not control this problem.  I will try to find a solution for it to the best of my ability.
  • Please remember that this is a free app and I rely on your donations for the upkeep of this app.

Q1:  How do I create my own customized itinerary/schedule -- say, for 30 days?

Let us say that you want to create an itinerary for 30 days for the entire Camino Frances, and you want to leave on April 2, 2015.

1. Choose a base itinerary

First choose a base itinerary -- closest to what you want to create.  Choose this from one of the 6 pre-defined itineraries provided by the app, as seen on the screen below.  This is to make it easier for you to create your own schedule.  For a 30 day itinerary, I would choose the base itinerary "I:Cam Frances 31 days".

2.  Click on Hiker Icon

Once you have chosen your base itinerary, and it is showing on your screen. Create your own itinerary by clicking on the hiker icon on the menu bar:

3. Enter your schedule options.

Once you have clicked on the hiker icon, you will be prompted by the following screen:

Here, you can enter your own itinerary  name, in this case "My Camino Schedule".  The Itinerary name is defaulted to "Camino Pilgrim" plus a sequence number. (Note that you can change the Itinerary name default by entering a User name in the "Settings" option.  The Settings options is available from the main menu bar by clicking the icon with the 3 dots.  For some devices, the Settings are available from the rightmost icon below the main screen -- sometimes a 3 line icon).

You then choose a start place, by clicking on the drop-down list, or leave the default as "Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port". The drop-down looks like the screen below, and you can choose where you want to start from this list that starts from the first locality -- in this case, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

Choose an end place, by clicking on the drop-down-list, or leave the default, in this case "Santiago de Compostela". (The screen will be something like the one above, except it will show Santiago de Compostela, and the localities beside it.

Choose a start date, in this case, 4/2/2015 (or April 2, 2015). The date format will differ depending on which locale you have set in your phone.

Press OK.

4.  Confirm Save

The next screen will ask for a confirmation, as below:

Note that this screen gives information on how to edit your created itinerary.  To continue, click "Save and Edit?"

5.  Examine your created schedule and itinerary

You will then be shown the schedule you created, as follows:

Note: An itinerary is also automatically created as "I: My Camino Schedule - Itinerary," which you will see if you click the drop-down list on the top of the screen. The difference is that this shows just the stages, without dates.

Within this schedule, you can click on any of the days/stages to see the towns that you will pass.  For example, clicking on Day 1 will show you the following screen:

For this particular stage, you can see that there is an alternate route.  From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the road forks (marked as "Alternate Route forks here") to either pass through an "Alternate Route" (Arneguy, Luzaide/Valcarlos), or through the "Regular Route" (Huntto, Orisson).  The following information are shown for each town, as you can see from the title bar:

The other icons below the locality name tells what facilities are available in each town. Clicking on the info icon (white circle with the big i), will show you the following screen describing the icons:

6. Customize your schedule or itinerary

Given the above schedule based on the 31 day itinerary, you can then revise any stage by long-pressing on a given day, and choosing one of the provided options:

   - Add Rest Day
   - Insert in Between Day
   - Combine Two Days
   - Add Extra Day

Make sure that you do NOT edit the system-provided itineraries.

For example, one way to make a 30 day itinerary from the system-provided 31 day itinerary, you can combine one walking day and adjust other days.

An example is to look at the shorter days. Notice that days 26 and 27 are only 21.1 and 18.3 -- you can combine them, by long pressing on Day 25: Sun, O Cebreiro - Triacastela.  The following menu will appear:

Click on "Combine Two Days" and the following screen appears:

You can decide whether 39.4 kms is reasonable.  For example, if you look at the altitudes, you will see that the trail will be downhill so it might be reasonable to achieve 39.4 kms in a day.

Click on OK and the new day: Day 25 O Cebreiro - Sarria is created.

If you think this is too long a day, then you can long click on Day 25 O Cebreiro- Sarria and this time, choose "Insert in between day". The following screen appears:

You can scroll down, looking at the cumulative distances.  For example, you can choose to stop at San Mamede, Lugo which is 36 kms via the regular route (the alternate route distances are also shown enclosed in parentheses "()" -- for this case, the alternate route passes through Samos, so if you pass here then the distance to San Mamede will be 42.5 kms via Samos).

Then maybe once you choose this option, you can combine the next two days: Day 26 San Mamede - Sarria which is only 3.4 kms and Day 27 Sarria - Portomarin which is 22.4 kms, to come up with Day 26: San Mamede - Portomarin with 25.8 kms.

Now you have a 30 day itinerary/schedule automatically generated!

In this way, by choosing one of the options, you can create your customized itinerary.

Note: I would suggest looking at the altitudes to see if the trail goes up or down. In addition, you need to check out what facilities are available. Some localities have no lodging or restaurants or pharmacies.

--------------------------------

Q2: How do I delete the itinerary I created?

To delete, select the itinerary that you want to delete, then click on the 3 dots and choose 'Delete Itinerary/ Schedule'.  This is how the 3-dot icon looks like (it is actually called the Overflow icon):

In some smaller devices, this icon does not appear and the overflow icon may look like the icons described in this link: different menu/overflow menu icons

Q3: How do I use offline maps?

Currently, there are 3 Map Types provided in the Settings of Camino Pilgrim:

  • Google Maps - Online
  • OpenStreetMaps -  Online
  • Mapsforge - Offline

  • If you are using Wifi and/or have no limitations in mobile data, then using the online maps, i.e. Google Maps - Online and OpenStreetMaps - Online -- is not a problem. You may notice, though, that OpenStreetMaps (OSM) online maps may load a bit slower than those of  Google Maps, so please just be patient.  The OSM tiles are provided by the Mapquest.  You may also notice that if you use the online options, if you have browsed through certain areas online, these areas will also be visible even if there is no data connection.  This is because the map tiles you have browsed are sometimes cached.

If you are walking on the Camino and do not have Wifi or do not want to use Mobile Data, then you would need to have an offline capability to view the maps.  Camino Pilgrim allows you the option to view the Camino offline.

To use the offline maps option, go to the Settings screen as shown below. The Settings Screen is accessed by pressing the 3 dots on your action bar and choosing Settings.  Set your Map Type to the Mapsforge -- Offline option. Under Manage Offline Maps, press Download Offline Maps and you will be prompted to download maps.  The maps (Spain and France Aquitaine) are downloaded from the Mapsforge servers and total about 300 MB, so use the offline option only if you have enough space.  The downloading is done in the background, and you will notice this in your notifications.  You may continue using the app while the offline maps are being downloaded.

If you do not want to use the offline maps option or need the space, just press Delete Offline Maps. Once in a while, the maps are updated on the server, so just press Update Offline Maps if you would like to get the latest offline map versions. Make sure you have a stable and fast internet connection when downloading offline maps.

If you decide to abort or cancel your current download, click on the option Cancel Download of Offline Maps.

Once the Mapsforge - Offline option is set, you can use the maps even without an internet connection, as long as you set your GPS on in your phone.

Here is a map of Logroño (great tapas here!!!) using the Mapsforge - Offline maps. (Screenshot from a 7" tablet)

To see your current location, press the Show Location icon -->
For Google-Online maps, you will have to press this Show Location icon again on the map.

You will see the hiker icon superimposed on the map -- this is where you are!

Notice also that there is a red line drawn on top of the map -- this is actually a simplified version of the Camino route.  It gives a general direction of where you should go, but please do not depend on it completely. When in doubt, ask your fellow pilgrims, or even better, pay attention and follow the yellow arrows that will lead you to Santiago de Compostela.

Q4:  How do I share my location?

With the Camino Pilgrim app, you can Share your location or exactly where you are (coordinates and address) either by email, sms, viber or whatever is available in your device.  When I was on the Camino last Spring 2013, I used another app to share my location with my family -- I think it is important to have and so I put this feature in this app.

For this feature, location services must be enabled.

Important Note for Sharing your Location!   If your location is not immediately shown, you may have to reboot your device to ensure that the latest update of Google Play Services is enabled.   It may happen that the message "Location Services not Available" appears.  In this case, please reboot your phone/device.  This was also a problem in my test device but location services then worked after a simple reboot. :-)

You also need to make sure that your phone has Wifi enabled, GPS enabled and Location Services on.

How do you set location services on?

For Android 4.1:  go to Settings -> Location and Security, and enable wireless networks and/or GPS Satellites.  Then go to Privacy and check Use my Location

For Android 4.2:  go to Settings -> Location access, and set Access to my location ON
Also check GPS Satellites and Wi-Fi & mobile network location.

For Android 4.4:  go to Settings -> Location and make sure it is on.

Now you are ready to share your location!  When you are in the Map, say, in the following screen (screenshot of an offline map showing all locality stops), you will see three icons at the bottom of the screen.

The "Show my Location" icon is this one, and clicking on this icon will show you where you are.  A hiker icon is superimposed on the map to show your exact location.  For Google online-- you will have to click again on this icon located somewhere in the map.

The "Share my Location" icon is this one:

To share your location, just click on the above icon, and a dialog box appears with your exact coordinates and address, if found by location services.  If you click on "Share my location?", a set of different options for sharing are shown, depending on what is available in your device. i.e. Gmail, Evernote, Drive, Google+, Hangouts, SMS.  To share on Facebook, the coordinates of your location will appear, and you will be asked to write something.

Q5:  How do I report a new albergue?

If you are the owner of a new albergue or a pilgrim who has encountered a new albergue currently not in the Camino Pilgrim app, it would be great if you could send me information about the albergue. This way, I would be able to add this albergue in a new version.  The place has to cater to pilgrims with beds costing less than 20 euros.

Please remember to add the following information:

    • Albergue name
    • GPS coordinates (you could send me the coordinates using the Share my Location option in the app or email: feedback@camino.moemke.com)
    • Address
    • Telephone/s
    • Website
    • Email address
    • Opening dates (i.e. April - October)
    • Opening times (i.e. 0900-2300)
    • Number of beds available to pilgrims
    • What type of albergue? Either municipal, religious or parroquial, or private.
    • Cost of a bed (does the cost include breakfast and/or meals?)
    • Can I get a pilgrim credential there?
    • Does it have a kitchen?
    • Does it have a washing machine?
    • Does it have a dryer?
    • Does it have Wifi?
    • If no wifi, does it have computers with internet? How much per hour?
    • Does it have a vending machine?
    • Does it have a secure place to store bicycles?
    • Any other information or comments

Q6:  I am having problems downloading offline maps, what should I do?

About your issue re problems with downloading, one way you can solve this is to clear Download Manager data.

To do this, go to Settings > Apps > All

    Then choose:
    Download Manager

    Then click on button:
    Clear Data
    and
    Clear Cache

    Then OK.

(Looks like an issue with Google's Download Manager.)

Q7:  I have already cleared Download Manager but I still cannot download offline maps, what to do?

Please go through the following checklist.

First, you will need to check some settings on your device.  After this, you will need to check your settings in the Camino Pilgrim app.

    I.  Checking your Device Settings

    1.  Is your Wifi on?  (Or if willing to use your mobile data service which can incur charges, is your Mobile Data on?)

Downloading offline maps requires that your wifi is on because it needs a connection to the Internet.  Usually, one would download offline maps over wifi.  If you are willing to use your mobile data, this may incur charges.

    • How do I turn on Wifi on?

               Go to Device Settings- >
               Wifi -> Slide to ON

    • How do I turn Mobile Data on? (Important Note: May incur phone carrier charges!)
Go to your Device: Settings ->
Data Usage -> Mobile Data -> Slide to ON

    2.  Do you have enough RAM or memory?

Some devices have little memory.  You may need to shut down all other apps running just while you are downloading offline maps.

How do I shut down all other apps running currently?

There is a very good discussion in the following link showing 2 ways to close other apps currently running.  In summary, this can be done by clicking the Recent Apps button (the little boxes on rightmost bottom of device -- the leftmost button is the back key) or by manually closing each app through the Application Manager (i.e. Device Settings ->DEVICE - apps, RUNNING tab).

Please read the more detailed discussion is in this link: How to Close Apps on Android

    3.  Do you have enough Storage in your device?

Please check if you have enough storage in your device.  You should have at least 450-500 MB for the offline maps.
    • How do I check if I have enough storage?
      • Go to your Device Settings-> Storage
      • Total space is shown, as well as Available space in your device.
      • The offline maps will need about 450 MB, so please make sure that you have at least this amount of Available space. (A little more is probably much better)
Check out these suggestions on how to clear up storage space on your phone:  Clearing up storage space on your phone

II. Checking settings on Camino Pilgrim

If you have checked the 3 points above under Checking your Device Settings, then you can try the following checklist.

    1.  Did you download the Offline Maps?

Open Camino Pilgrim, click on the 3 dots and choose Settings.
Under the heading MANAGE OFFLINE MAPS,
click on Download Offline Maps, then click OK.

The offline maps should now be downloading.

    2. Did you set the Camino Pilgrim Setting -> Map Type to Mapsforge - Offline?

Open Camino Pilgrim, click on the 3 dots and choose Settings.
Under the heading MAP TYPE, click on the dot beside Mapsforge - Offline.

Your Map type is now set to Mapsforge - Offline.

    3.  Does the offline map appear when you click on the Map Icon?

Open the map by clicking on the Map icon.
If the offline map is currently downloading -- a message will appear that the offline map is currently downloading, together with the percentage downloaded.  The  notifications will also show that the maps are downloading.  Please wait until the maps are completely downloaded, then, click on the Map icon again, and the offline maps should appear.  (The offline maps do not immediately show up especially at the high zoom levels, i.e. all stops on camino map -- please wait a bit until the map appears.)

Hopefully, at this point, your offline map should appear!  But if not, continue on...

    4.  After 1, 2 and 3, the map still does not appear -- was a previous download incomplete?

If you have done 1, 2 and 3, and the map still does not appear, it is possible that a previous download was not completed.

Try to download again, but this time using Update Offline Map so that the current map is deleted and a new map is downloaded.

Open Camino Pilgrim, click on the 3 dots and choose Settings.
Under the heading MANAGE OFFLINE MAPS,
click on Update Offline Maps, then click OK.

Please wait until the offline maps have finished downloading.  If opening the map in Camino Pilgrim, a message shows that your map is still downloading.  In addition, a notification will appear on your device describing the status of the download.  Once finished, this notification will say Download completed.

    5.  After 1, 2, 3, 4, the map still does not appear, what to do?

Using a file manager like ES File Explorer, check the following location on your device where the Camino Pilgrim maps are located:

    /storage/emulated/0/CaminoPilgrim/Offline Maps
    OR
    /sdcard/CaminoPilgrim/OfflineMaps

There should be 2 files there:
    spain.map (about 273 MB)
    aquitaine.map (about 111 MB)

If the map sizes are much less than these numbers, please do # 4 again, as the maps were probably incompletely downloaded.

    6. After 1 to 5, I still cannot download the offline map, what to do?

Please email me via the Send Feedback icon in Camino Pilgrim, and I will gladly help out for your particular case.  Please specify your particular device type and operating system (i.e. Huawei Ascend P7 running Android 4.4;  Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.2).  This will give me further information to figure out the issue.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q8:  How do I use the alternate routes?

The Camino Pilgrim app takes into account alternate routes.  In the Camino Frances, there are 6 areas where the Camino offers an alternate route.  These are the following with the major towns on the Regular Route/Alternate Route.

    1. Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles
      • Regular Route over the Pyrenees
      • Alternate Route via Valcarlos
    2. Pamplona to Puente la Reina
      • Regular Route
      • Alternate Route passing by Santa Maria de la Eunate
    3. Ages to Burgos
      • Regular Route via Castanares
      • Alternate Route passing by Villafria
    4. Terradillos de los Templarios to Leon
      • Regular Route via El Burgo Ranero
      • Alternate Route via Calzadilla de los Hermanillos
    5. Leon to Hospital de Orbigo
      • Regular Route via Villadangos de los Paramos
      • Alternate Route via Vilar de Mazarife
    6. Triacastela to Sarria
      • Regular Route via Calvor
      • Alternate Route via Samos
In the app, the regular route is unmarked until it reaches a fork, at which time, the following markings appear:

    • Alternate route forks here (town where alternate route forks from regular route)
    • Alternate route (towns on alternate route)
    • Last town on alternate route (the last town on alternate route before the camino rejoins the regular route)
    • Regular route (towns on regular route)
    • Alternate route rejoins here (on the regular route, where the alternate route rejoins the regular route)

For example, from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles, the following appears

The above are the 2 screenshots showing the route from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Orreaga/Roncesvalles.  from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (marked with Alternate Route forks here), you can either follow the Alternate route or the Regular route.  The distances on the alternate route are shown with parentheses '(' and ')'.

To follow the Alternate Route, then the distance from the last town and cumulative distances are shown with parentheses, and your itinerary will be:
    Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Alternate Route forks here)     (0.0)     (0.0)
    Arneguy  (Alternate Route)                                             (10.0)    (10.0)
    Luzaide/Valcarlos (Alternate Route)                                (3.0)     (13.0)
    Orreaga/Roncesvalles (Alternate Route rejoins here)    (12.0)    (25.0)

To follow the Regular Route, from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, your itinerary will be:
    Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Alternate Route forks here)       0.0       0.0
    Huntto  (Regular Route)                                                      5.0       5.0
    Orisson (Regular Route)                                                      2.4       7.4
    Chateau-Pignon  (Regular Route)                                       3.8       11.2
Col de Bentarte (Regular Route)                                        5.2       16.4
Cold de Lepoeder  (Regular Route)                                    4.0       20.4
Puerto de Ibaneta (Regular Route)                                      3.6       24.0
    Orreaga/Roncesvalles (Alternate Route rejoins here)       1.6       25.6

As you can see, the alternate route is only (25.0) kms cumulative distance while the regular route over the Pyrenees is 25.6 kms.

This was the easiest way I could show in the app both the alternate and regular routes, and compute cumulative distances using either one, so you can decide which way to use. (I went through all the regular routes during my Camino, although if I had time, I would have passed the alternate route via Samos, even if it was longer -- next time. :-) )

    Q9:  How can I help?

You can help me by sending feedback about changes in prices of albergues and reporting new albergues, as it is very difficult to collect this information and this information changes constantly.  Therefore, I also ask that you please send this updated information to me (just by clicking on the send feedback option inside the app) rather than giving a bad rating and saying that some of the albergue prices are not updated.

You can help me by giving an excellent rating!  As you can see, the app is free and without advertisements.  I have worked very hard on this app and invested a lot of time in its development -- more than a year.  I have used my own resources, meaning I was not and am not paid by anyone nor have I earned anything from any of the information I provide in the app.

You can help me by donating any amount to help me in my work to continue to update and maintain this app -- from the equivalent cost of a cafe solo (1 euro along the Camino Frances), to the equivalent cost of only one night in an albergue (at least 5 euros), or the amount you save from using the app and not buying/carrying a guidebook (at least 10 euros) or maybe even a bit more. You can do this by clicking on the donate button.

Thank you very much to all those who have already donated and given excellent ratings! I read all of your ratings and while I am working on the app, I appreciate very much any amount you donate -- treasuring the thought that my app has helped you along your Way.

Thank you for reading and Buen Camino!!!

    4. Spectacular app, thank you. I will definitely donate. Is there a way to mark ahead of time the albergue I intend to stop at in the itinerary so it will route me (directions, distance, etc, because perhaps I have made a reservation) directly there for that given day? I so appreciate your fine work! THANK YOU!

    6. I am going back to the Camino Frances with my daughter. Since she has limited time, we want to start in Sarria and finish in Santiago. We are also going to take it easy, 12 days and I will know my stops. How do I insert them into the itinerary?
